If you've ever had the opportunity to visit your childhood home, then you know that the closets were amazingly small back when you were a kid. Sure, they seemed large enough to play hide and seek in and store your school and play clothes, but that was about it. Especially when you had to share your room with a brother or sister.
Even the coat closet by the front door was tiny, at least compared to today's cavernous walk-in closets, which should come with tour maps and a guide.
And yet, our closets still stretch and bulge to the point that they look possessed by demons. We just have so much stuff and as any homeowner knows, "stuff expands over the years to fill the space available."
It's difficult to add a closet to a home, but it's a cinch to add hall chests, which can handle your ever growing collection of goods with expandable aplomb.
Hall chests used to be a fixture of every American home. Available in a wide range of styles, these differ from the cedar chest or hope chests you may have in mind. Like their ancestors, hall chests look a lot like a dresser or chest of drawers. They have large drawers that can hold linens, seasonal serving items, games or memories.
These hall chests fit well in any hall, of course. But they can also tuck in under a stairwell, at the top of a landing, outside the bedrooms - anywhere additional space is needed; yet a closet is either unavailable or impractical.
As with all furniture these days, hall chests come in a wide range of styles, finishes and materials. Some hall chests are extremely ornate, mimicking those that were popular at the turn of the century. Others are simpler, picking up design cues from the Amish.
When selecting hall chests for spaces in your home, you can either choose to select styles that are similar or which complement your existing furnishings or use them as transitional pieces to go from one style to another. This works particularly well when hall chests are placed on landings or in between floors. They can often be used to set the tone for the next floor up, picking up colors or designs from one floor to the other.
Shopping for hall chests is much like any other dresser-style furnishing. You want to make sure that your hall chests are well built. The drawers should be large so that you can use them for a variety of purposes. You don't want to limit your choices by picking a chest that has drawers that aren't wide enough to fit in a few board games or a large comforter.
Hall chests can also add storage to a large bathroom. Why travel back and forth to the linen closet when you can store extra towels and toiletries in an attractive hall chest right in the bathroom. You'll gain a new appreciation for hall chests when you step out of a shower soaking wet and need a fresh towel.
The majority of families have hundreds of photos stored in drawers, bins, and albums, and you might not be any different. You might even have a strategy or a few good ideas of how you would like to get these pictures organized one day. The tough thing is that it is quite easy to keep putting off doing this job since it is somewhat time consuming and requires effort. If it is a high priority for you to organize your family photos then follow the tips below and you will do just fine.
Plan on Protecting Your Pictures
Your greatest priority in storing your photos should be to save from any harm that could occur during their time in storage. At times your photos could get damaged even if they are stored in albums. As an example, one style of album called a "magnetic" album will likely cause your photos to stick which might eventually lead to harm. Your pictures could also get hurt if they are being stored in albums that are not specifically acid-free. Pictures can often become bent, ripped, and damaged in other ways if they are merely stashed in boxes or crates. While pictures that are just prints of digital files may always be reprinted, you still have to very carefully store vintage pictures to prevent damage. You may not even have the original negatives for a few of your favorite pictures. You are at risk of losing those pictures forever if they are damaged beyond repair. Before this happens, you should make plans for safe photograph storage. There are many great ways to keep your pictures safe, including scrapbook albums, boxes made expecially for holding photos, and bins that are specifically made from acid-free materials. Of course, you might also wish to display some of your favorite pictures, even if you want to keep the originals stored with the rest of your archived pictures. You'll even be able to exhibit those vintage photographs in picture frames if you simply take the time to copy them and make copies. You might even be able to improve the look of them on a computer program if there are markings from stains, rips, or creases.
Making the Perfect Photo Album
Although there probably really is not any such thing as the "perfect picture album," there are album styles that can be the best thing for a specific need you've got in mind. You may, for example, desire to sort your photos in a certain way such as by subject, chronology, or some other idea you may have. So long as the sorting technique works for you, there is nothing wrong with it. If your photos are currently stuffed into boxes without any semblance of order, it might take a bit of time and also effort to get them all categorized. You may be able to get this job done rather quickly if you simply dedicate a whole table and a couple days of your time to doing the task. When they are all organized you might count them and figure out exactly how many albums or perhaps scrapbooks you will need to have in order to find a place for them all. If you cannot afford to purchase these albums all at once, set a goal of purchasing and completing one album each month, or whatever arrangement fits both your time schedule and your budget. As you are sorting your photos, you are likely to find some favorite pictures that you haven't seen in years. Displaying these favorites in picture frames can be a great way of enjoying them all over again.
So don't stress anymore and begin organizing your photos today!
Arts and crafts storage is one of the most important tools for a crafter. Keeping materials organized and easily accessible makes creating a lot more fun. Art storage comes in all shapes and sizes, so it is easy to customize storage to suit specific needs. For instance, a crafter who works with paint and watercolors needs different storage than one who works with scrapbooking supplies and rubber stamps. Regardless of the medium, all crafters need storage to keep supplies organized and get the most from what they have invested money in.
Crafters are notorious for having a lot of stuff. Each new craft project might require at least one or two additional tools or materials. Before too long, crafters have rooms filled with leftover materials and tools that are untidy and disorganized. This leads to buying items that are already on hand without even realizing they are already part of a collection. The clutter and chaos creates an endless need to buy more supplies. This problem of overbuying is solved with arts and crafts storage. Organization is one of the most important things a crafter can do.
Organizing might seem like a good idea, but without a game plan and the proper materials, organizing can be even more frustrating than dealing with the mess. The right kind of arts and crafts storage helps create an environment in which creating art is easy and pleasant. There are plenty of options when it comes to organizational tools. Craft supplies can be stored in bins, boxes, on shelves or racks. Organizational materials are made of different materials including plastic, wood and cardboard. It is even possible to match organizational materials to the style and decor of an existing craft room. Most crafters find themselves more motivated to organize if their organizational materials are attractive and fun to use.
One the materials are chosen or organzing, a plan should be created. By nature, crafters are great planner, so this part should be easy. Sort through the group of items that needs to be organized. Separate like things into piles and choose the right arts and crafts storage for each collection of materials. Keeping similar things together makes it easy to work when creating a project. For instance, paints should be stored in one location, adhesives in another, paper in another and so on. The bins or shelves should be labeled with the item name, making it easy to return items to their proper location and making it easy to find things that are not visible. Further labeling drawers or containers with colors or sizes makes it easy to quickly find a specific item when working on a project.
Arts and crafts storage does not have to be complicated. The best way to create art storage is to design a system that works. This will be different from person to person. The important thing to remember is how necessary good storage is when it comes to crafting. Crafters who work in cluttered, chaotic spaces are going to enjoy their art less than those who have organized, enjoyable spaces. Not only that, projects will be more successful and crafting will cost less money in the long run.
Even the most frugal person I know will occasionally splurge on an item that will help her keep more organized.
Here are some of my favorite organizational tools for the home.
1) Lazy Susan
Thanks to the soul who invented this little item! They're cheap, and help keep spices, bottles, and condiments neatly arranged and at your fingertips. Use them in the pantry, in cabinets, on the kitchen table - they're absolutely life savers when it comes to staying organized.
2) Plastic Basket for Lids
Plastic containers - a double edged sword! One the one hand they keep me organized and save tons of time in the kitchen, especially. But searching through ten thousand lids that don't fit can drive a person nutty. I use a plastic basket for all my lids so they're in one spot when I go looking.
3) A Triple Swing-out Towel Holder
Put these under your kitchen and bathroom sinks to save space and keep your sink area uncluttered. Use it to hold towels, cleaning rags, trash bags, etc.
4) Place a few strong adhesive hooks in the laundry room - these can be used for hanging coats, clothes, etc. Hooks are great to hang up mops, brooms and other cleaning supplies, too.
5) Plastic Baggies with Zipper Locks
How did our ancestors survive without them? Baggies are perfect to store small toys, puzzle pieces, and any little items that go together in one spot. The two-gallon sized ones are my favorite.
6) A Labeler
These don't have to be expensive to work. And having containers and shelf spaces labeled is a great way to help children keep their items organized, as well as yourself. Do yourself a favor use a labeler for a week, and you'll wonder hoe you ever lived without one.
7) A Compartment Tray for Your Junk Drawer
Occasionally, I actually open my junk drawer to search for something! Having miscellaneous items in little compartments of the tray will save you time and frustration when you go searching.
8) A TV Remote Holder
How much time have you wasted looking for this little item? Make or purchase a holder for your remote, or put velcro on the back and stick it someplace near the couch.
9) Laundry Sorting Bin
Less than ten bucks, these bins help keep your dirty laundry organized, so that when you're ready to wash the whites, they're all in the same spot. No more digging through a giant hamper to find the right clothes! This makes laundry time so much simpler!
10) Two-tiered Spice Racks
These cabinet organizers save time and hassle in the kitchen. How many times have you searched for the oregano - behind the cinnamon, no - the nutmeg...Wait -where was the nutmeg? You get the idea.
These items are by no means all the great organizing tools out there, but they're my choices for time saving and hassle free living!
Here are some organize workspace tips to help you get your office in order. Quite simply, you spend a huge portion of your life at work, and if this part of your life is not order, you'll never achieve nearly amount of work that you otherwise would. In fact, by simply organizing your items, you can not only be more productive at work, but your income can rise as well.
So how do you start to get your office organized? First of all, you need to get your desk organized, which is where you probably do the vast majority of your work. For this, simply keep all the items that you absolutely need at your desk, and remove the ones you don't.
Don't worry about those items that you remove for now; you can put those into storage place or the trash later on. Once you've done this, make sure that all your related items still on your desk are together, such as pencils, papers, etc.
A great way to organize your papers is to get a filing cabinet and color-code it according to which papers go where. For example, you might put your most important papers on the bottom shelf, your second most important papers in the second shelf above, etc.
This way, you'll never lose your papers due to a lack of organization your desk. Remember, trying to keep your papers in your desk can be a nightmare because you can almost never find what you want when you need.
The best ways to keep your office organized is to simply throw away items when you're done using them. Unfortunately, most people simple keep papers that they know they'll never use later on, for the fact that they might in a few years down the road.
This is how stacks of papers get built upon a desk, even only about 1% of them are actually being used. Only keep things you know you will be using later on. Look around you; if you see items sitting around you haven't used for at least the last 6 months, discard them now.
If you haven't made use of them in this time period, chances are that you never will. Don't lie to yourself; get rid of them now.
Remember, your workspace is one of the most important areas of your life, because you spend so much time there. It is just as important to organize your workspaces as it is your own home. You will never get nearly the amount of work done without an organized workspace as you would if you can simply know exactly where everything was every step of the time.
The average US executive loses six weeks each year simply looking for things amidst their clutter. If this can happen to top of the line executives, certainly anybody is at risk of it happening to them. Hopefully, these important as well help you to avoid this situation, and to achieve much more during your working hours than you normally would.
